Take the Test
When you reach a standard of driving that your Observer considers high enough he will suggest that you take the Advanced Driving Test. You will have to contact the Institute in London, who will take your membership details and pass them on to a local examiner who will then contact you to arrange a mutually convenient date, time and where you should meet.
On the agreed day, you will be expected to meet the examiner in your car, along with your driving documents and convince him/her that you are able to drive to the standard required by the Institute of Advanced Motorists. The drive will take approximately one and a half hours and cover driving on all kinds of roads, including motorways and at all speeds. You will also be expected to prove you can control your car by performing basic manoeuvres such as, parking and reversing using forward and reverse gears.
At the end of the drive the Examiner will tell you if you have reached the required standard to become an advanced driver and discuss with you any shortcomings in the test.
If you can succeed the test to a very high standard your pass will be classed as a “First” which deserves a special certificate.
